Minister for lower costs in private universities

 

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Thursday called upon the private university authorities to adopt liberal attitudes in fixing tuition fees and other costs for students, reports BSS. He made the call while presiding over the third convocation of Dhaka International University (DIU) as the representative of President Abdul Hamid at Mirpur Police Staff College Convention Hall in the city. The minister urged the private universities to keep the expenses of students within a limit, shunning the mentality of making 'business and benefits.' Prof. Dr. Syed Anwar Hossain was the convocation speaker while DIU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AK Mohsin and DIU Board of Trustee Chairman Dr. Muhammad Shaheedul Quadir Patwari also spoke on the occasion. Nahid said the government has already taken actions against those private universities which started activities with a view to make profits. Actions would be taken as per Private University Act 2010, if any university wants to make business and resort to cheating, he added.

Call for launching social movement against corruption

 

RANGPUR, Dec 11: Launching of a social movement against corruption with participation of common people can reduce corruption to speed up the present pace of national development for building a developed country, reports BSS. The opinion came at an anti-corruption planning meeting organised by Ward No-6 unit of Community Policing Forum of Mominpur union at Hazrahati Government Primary School under Sadar upazila here on Wednesday afternoon. RDRS Bangladesh assisted in arranging the meeting under the Justice Reform and Corruption Prevention (JRCP) Project with the assistance of German Development Cooperation (GIZ). The NGO has been implementing the project in Sadar and Kawnia upazilas in Rangpur to reduce corruption under GIZ funding with assistance of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. Member for Ward No-6 of Mominpur union Ahsan Habib Dulal attended the meeting as the chief guest with President of Ward No-6 unit of Community Policing Forum of Mominpur union Haripado Mohanta in the chair.

Main construction work on Padma Bridge begins today

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the main bridge construction work of Padma Multipurpose Bridge today (Saturday) morning at Jajira point in Shariatpur district.
She will also inaugurate the river training work at Mawa point in Munshiganj.
The government is building the Padma Bridge about 6.15-km, the country's largest infrastructure, with its own fund of Tk 28,000 crore.
On completion of the project, nearly six crore people of 19 southern districts will be connected with the rest of the country, including the capital Dhaka.
The work on the Padma Bridge is broadly divided into five parts -- the main bridge, river training, two link roads and infrastructure (service area) construction.
The two-tier Padma Bridge has the provisions for movement of vehicles on the upper tier of the bridge and operation of train on the lower tier.

Actress Daisy Ridley on major 'Star Wars' role: 'It's very odd

The 23-year-old plays scavenger Rey in "The Force Awakens", a central character in the sci-fi movie. The reality of getting such a coveted role has not yet sunk in for the actress, whose past credits include a few television series appearances.
 "It's not ever something I pictured so it's a very odd thing, very odd," Ridley told Reuters in an interview.
 "When I first got cast, no one could know, so it's three months of me going 'alright I can deal with this, this is me'," she said. "And then everyone else knew, and it was like 'OK, there's a few more people to deal with now'."
 "The Force Awakens", the first "Star Wars" film in 10 years, also stars the saga's old hands Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill as well as newcomers John Boyega and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o.
 "I started auditioning two years ago ... and it took like seven months and five auditions and then I got cast," Ridley said. "I think they were just seeing many, many girls because obviously, if they weren't, then I would never have been seen."
